The transmembrane protein TLR5 is a component of the immune system that is highly expressed in intestinal mucosa and recognizes bacterial flagellin (PMID 20203013)(reviewed by Alison Coffey and team, Illumina).
PMID 25395539 reports that mice treated with bacterial flagellin prevented rotavirus (RV) infection and cured chronically RV-infections. This processed required the flagellin receptors Tlr5 and Nlrc4. Flagellin-induced activation of Tlr5 on dendritic cells elicited production of the cytokine Il22, resulting in a protective gene expression program in intestinal epithelial cells. Administration of Il22 to mice reproduced the capacity of flagellin to prevent or cure RV.
