4 reviews

Arina Puzriakova (Genomics England Curator)

PMID: 28796785 (2017) - describes 34 patients from 28 families with SMARCAL1-associated nephropathy. Six patients had moderate cognitive impairment and another three presented with mild developmental delay.

However, a further literature review revealed that most individuals have normal intellect and any developmental delay or cognitive impairment is preceded by chronic illness and/or early recurrent cerebral ischemic events (PMID: 20301550). This indicates that intellectual deficits are secondary rather than a core feature of this phenotype, and therefore the Red rating on this panel is appropriate.

Comment on publications: PMID: 28796785 was identified by the Genomics England Applied Machine Learning (ML) team in a Biocuration-ML project for identifying new gene-disease associations using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Generative AI techniques
