Red List (low evidence)

Evidence Summary from Illumina curation team: CLDN9 gene encodes for the Claudin-9 protein. The claudin family constitutes a large group of four- transmembrane domain proteins that are essential for the formation of tight junctions responsible for the control of paracellular transport. Studies have demonstrated that CLDN9 and CLDN6 mediate the entry of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) into both hepatic and non-hepatic cell lines (Zheng et al. 2007) however, HCV infection is not dependent on the presence of CLDN9 (Fofana et al. 2013).
