Preprint (https://doi.org/10.1101/2020.06.16.155101). Genome-wide CRISPR screen showed CTSL was positively selected during SARS-CoV-2 infection, indicating this is a pro-viral gene and knockout confers resistance to virus-induced cell death.

CTSL encodes the Cathepsin L protease which mediates viral cell entry by cleaving the spike protein, in turn exposing the viral fusion peptide and enabling membrane fusion.

No variants have been described that modulate susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2; however, might be one to watch.
