VPS4A was identified through an OMIM search for potential viral susceptibility genes. Based on initial triage by Illumina (Tier 5 grouping).

"VPS4 ATPases recognize their CHMP substrates to facilitate the membrane fission events required for the release of viruses, endosomal vesicles, and daughter cell VPS4A belongs to the AAA (ATPases associated with diverse cellular activities) protein family and is involved in lysosomal/endosomal membrane trafficking" (reviewed by Alison Coffey and team, Illumina).
In the review article PMID 30615963, it sets out how in late-stage infection with HIV, the Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport (ESCRT) complexes and Vps4 are recruited to the plasma membrane where they enable the budding of the HIV particles and Ebola (another enveloped virus). In conclusion, they discuss agents that target host proteins such as Vps4p and ESCRT-III as antivirals.
